Whether recreational or professionally competitive, sports have been a part of America's pasttime for ages. Sports can be a great hobby or they can be a very serious part of life. Some play sports to keep fit while others use sports to fulfill a natural desire to compete. And there are so many sports today, more and more being created everyday. Most people think of baseball as America's favorite sport and rightly so. America has popularized the sport worldwide and has been played for over a century at home. Sometimes this fosters disputes between what players should make and how much team owners are willing to spend. A disagreement like this could result in damaging effects as evidenced by the National Hockey League's 2004/2005 season which was completely cancelled.

But mostly, sports are used to get some exercise and spend some time with friends and family. It is usually a recreaional activity and is played with good sportsmanship and with the intent of fun more than victory. Some people organize local leagues while others just gather when it is convenient. Either way, sports will remain an important part of American culture.
